Come to think of it, it's been about ten years since I started this website back on Yahoo! GeoCities (geocities.com/talesofthewolf, as I recollect). Believe it or not, GeoCities was still around for ages, and only recently announced their closure. The influence of GeoCities on the young internet was huge, particularly for anime fandom - anime shrines, fansub trading sites. The internet was a goldmine of informational scraps waiting to be harvested. With the eventual formation of sites like Wikipedia where information is more centralized, the need for people to create tiny, free GeoCities shrines and joining WebRings has long since past. |
